Weather Themed Writing and Crafts

As part of our Nonfiction block and FOSS kit work, we have been learning about a variety of weather topics.    In the photo above, students wrote about what they would do if they were a meteorologist on TV.

"If I were a meteorologist, I will tell my class the weather and my parents."

"If I were a meteorologist, I would tell the weather and I will tell when a storm is coming."

We read The Rain Came Down by David Shannon after learning about how a rain gauge works.  Then we wrote about what we like to do on a rainy day.

After learning about the types of clouds in the sky, we read It Looked Like Spilt Milk  by Charles Green Shaw.  We looked at the clouds in the sky and what they can form, then we created some things we saw in the sky using shaving cream and glue.  The students enjoyed this activity!

Wings

Today my Reading Roots Readers earned their Wings.  We had a mini-ceremony in which each student was given a certificate and a pair of wings.  Then we had a Butterfly snack and drink to celebrate their success!   I'm so proud of them!  Several of my students have shown 6-8 stages of growth in 3 quarters.  Did I mention how proud I am of them?!

FOSS KIT: Air and Weather Investigation

Students worked with syringes, bottles, tubes and water today to explore how air pressure can move water, as well as to prove that air takes up space through a variety of experiments.  Students worked in pairs to create an instrument to show the above mentioned concepts.

Congruent Shapes Activity

We started Unit 8 today in Everyday Math.  Our lesson was about Congruent and Non-Congruent Shapes.  Students used straws and twist ties to create Congruent shapes.  Hands-on activities are always fun, and at the same time challenge students to apply what they know about shapes in a new way.  You can see from the photos that they were very into creating their shapes.

Be Someone's Hero

On Thursday, West Side Elementary had it's kick-off assembly for the Be Someone's Hero Campaign to stop bullying in our schools.

Spiderman even made an appearance!  Our class is seated on the left giving Spiderman high fives!

Parachutes

In Science, with the help of the FOSS kit, we are learning about air and weather.  Today we made parachutes and learned about wind resistance.  Above, the students are putting together their parachutes.  The pictures below show them dropping the parachutes to see how they fall.

On Day 2, the students will record their findings and observations.

Author Visit

Johnstown author, Joseph Moore visited our school today.  He read his newest book, Maxwell the Raindrop, Am I Still Me? to our kindergarten and first grade classes.  The children enjoyed the book and it's message.

Amazon writes:  A story that celebrates growth and change. Maxwell the raindrop falls to save a thirsty flower. Later he turns into vapor, a snowflake and then back into water. With every change he asks "How can I look different but still be me?"
