Science Snapshot: Living and Non-living

In Science, we are working on our unit on living and non-living things.  Inspired by this freebie by Sarah Paul on TPT, I brought in mealworms and rocks for the students to observe, compare and draw conclusions about living and non-living things.

The students followed the steps of the scientific method and concluded that mealworms are living because they moved, ate and changed into insects (eventually!).  The rocks did not move and were not eating, therefore, they were non-living.

Creating Polygons

Today in Math we continued to learn about the attributes of polygons.  First, we did a polygon search in our classroom.  Then,  we created an anchor chart of the attributes of a polygon. (Which I forgot to photograph!) Next, we used mini marshmallows and toothpicks to create two polygons each.  Finally, we compared the polygons we created.

Hard at work creating a polygon!

The students love these hands-on activities!

What's Happening in Room 23

We have been learning a lot in Room 23.  As part of Miss Summerville's unit on Pennsylvania, the students made Groundhogs in honor of Punxsutawney Phil's visit.

 Busy workers!

This week, we will begin our Unit on Geometry by exploring shapes and their attributes.  We will also celebrate the 100th day of school this week.   In Language Arts, students will be writing about what super power they would have if they were super heroes.  We will begin Science this week as well.  Students will be learning about Scientists and the Scientific Method.

On Friday, we will have our Valentine's Day party.  Please complete the party form that will be sent home on Monday and return it to me by Thursday, February 13th so we can be prepared for Friday's activities.  Students are to bring in their valentine cards on Friday, as well.

Reminders:

--Please initial your child's weekly update form in the DOT binder every Friday.

--Wednesday, February 12th is an Act 80 Day, which means no school for students.

--Thank you for those who supported the Snowflake Project.  Our class earned five dollars toward for incentives.  We also were the classroom with the greatest amount of snowflakes! HOORAY!

Have a terrific week!
