March Writing and Crafts

After reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, the children wrote about what would happen if
Thing 1 or Thing 2 visited their house and we made a.....

...Thing 1 or Thing 2!  Thank you to Mr. Barr for making patterns for us to use!

We read the story The Luckiest Leprechaun by Justine Korman.   It's a tale of friendship between a leprechaun and a happy dog.  Then we shared when we felt lucky with our partners and classmates.  Students then completed the sentence stem, I feel lucky when.... and made a leprechaun, too.

I feel lucky when I see Mrs. Dryzal because she is the best and she is nice.  :0)

Learning in Room 23

Math

Last week, we completed our Geometry Unit in Math.  As a final activity we read the book, The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns and then created a shape man or woman, and wrote why we would want to be that shape.  The children were very creative with their ideas.

Writing

As part of our St. Patrick's Day activities, Lucky the Leprechaun visited our classroom and brought us magic powder that made Leprechaun pudding when milk was added and we shook it up while singing a special chant.  We read the story The Luckiest Leprechaun by Justine Korman and then wrote about when we feel lucky.  Above is our display and below are two examples of their work.

Reading

In Reading, my leveled group just completed the Reading Roots program.  They will now begin Reading Wings, the program for grades 2-5. The last book we in SFA Roots was Paul Bunyan's Pancakes To celebrate, students wrote a tall tale about a larger than life pet they would have similar to Paul Bunyan's pet, Blue Babe.   As part of the celebration, I made pancakes from scratch, and we had them as a mid-morning snack.  The children really enjoyed them!

Language Arts

In Language Arts, we are working on Research Writing.  This unit we are focusing on Earthworms.  On Friday, students observed a live earthworm and made Venn Diagrams comparing earthworms with people.  Their observations will be used as part of their research writing project.

Thank you for stopping by!

What's Happening in Room 23?

Our bean plants have finally begun to sprout!

 The children are so excited!

In Language Arts, we researched the life of George Washington Carver.  The students wrote about his life and accomplishments and made the portraits of the famous botanist.

In Math, we are learning about fractions.  This is the fraction sort the students completed in class.

In Science, we learned about matter and the three states of matter:  solids, liquids and gases.

This experiment showed the students how solids( baking soda) and liquids (white vinegar) can react and create a gas, blowing up the balloon.

This is Oobleck.  It is a suspension created by combining cornstarch and water.  It goes from a solid state to a liquid state and back again.

 Solid....

...then liquid.

It was a busy week of learning!
