Science and Reading

My reading group finished Reading Roots.  They are now working on Level 2, Savvy Readers during our Reading block.  For our final Roots Adventures in Writing , the students wrote Tall Tales about a pet they would have if they were a giant like Paul Bunyan.

In Science, we studied Matter.  The experiment above showed the 3 states of matter....solids, liquids and gases.  It also showed that a gas can be created by mixing baking soda with vinegar.

We also did a discovery lesson with Oobleck.  Some of the students were grossed out by it, but by the end of class all of them touched it and were amazed how it went from a solid to a liquid and back again.  You can make your own Oobleck at home.  Follow these simple directions:

 1 cup water
- 1 1/2-2 cups corn starch
- a few drops of food coloring of your choice

Start with the water in a bowl, add the food coloring if desired,  and start adding the corn starch to it. You can use a spoon at first, but eventually you will have to use your hands.

When you're getting close to adding 1 1/2 cups of the corn starch, start adding it in more slowly and mixing it in with your hand. The goal is to get a consistency where the Oobleck reaches a state that is the liquid and yet solid.  You may need to add more cornstarch to achieve the desired consistency.

Thank you for stopping by!

What's Happening in Room 23?

Our bean plants have finally begun to sprout!

 The children are so excited!

In Language Arts, we researched the life of George Washington Carver.  The students wrote about his life and accomplishments and made the portraits of the famous botanist.

In Math, we are learning about fractions.  This is the fraction sort the students completed in class.

In Science, we learned about matter and the three states of matter:  solids, liquids and gases.

This experiment showed the students how solids( baking soda) and liquids (white vinegar) can react and create a gas, blowing up the balloon.

This is Oobleck.  It is a suspension created by combining cornstarch and water.  It goes from a solid state to a liquid state and back again.

 Solid....

...then liquid.

It was a busy week of learning!
