What's Happening in Room 23?

Our bean plants have finally begun to sprout!

 The children are so excited!

In Language Arts, we researched the life of George Washington Carver.  The students wrote about his life and accomplishments and made the portraits of the famous botanist.

In Math, we are learning about fractions.  This is the fraction sort the students completed in class.

In Science, we learned about matter and the three states of matter:  solids, liquids and gases.

This experiment showed the students how solids( baking soda) and liquids (white vinegar) can react and create a gas, blowing up the balloon.

This is Oobleck.  It is a suspension created by combining cornstarch and water.  It goes from a solid state to a liquid state and back again.

 Solid....

...then liquid.

It was a busy week of learning!

What's Happening in Room 23

We have been learning a lot in Room 23.  As part of Miss Summerville's unit on Pennsylvania, the students made Groundhogs in honor of Punxsutawney Phil's visit.

Miss Summerville showing the students how to construct the groundhog.
 Busy workers!

This week, we will begin our Unit on Geometry by exploring shapes and their attributes.  We will also celebrate the 100th day of school this week.   In Language Arts, students will be writing about what super power they would have if they were super heroes.  We will begin Science this week as well.  Students will be learning about Scientists and the Scientific Method.

On Friday, we will have our Valentine's Day party.  Please complete the party form that will be sent home on Monday and return it to me by Thursday, February 13th so we can be prepared for Friday's activities.  Students are to bring in their valentine cards on Friday, as well.

Reminders:

--Please initial your child's weekly update form in the DOT binder every Friday.

--Wednesday, February 12th is an Act 80 Day, which means no school for students.

--Thank you for those who supported the Snowflake Project.  Our class earned five dollars toward for incentives.  We also were the classroom with the greatest amount of snowflakes! HOORAY!

Have a terrific week!

News from Room 23

--Due to the 3-day school week, we will NOT be having a Spelling test.  We will begin with Lesson 13 immediately following the Thanksgiving break.  Look for the word list to post this coming weekend.

--A 1-hour Early Dismissal will take place on Wednesday, November 27th.  Students will be dismissed beginning at 2:25 p.m..  School will be closed November 28th through December 2nd.  Classes resume Tuesday, December 3rd.

--We are joining the Football boosters, the Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and the cheerleaders to put together a district-wide and Key Club  food drive.  Students are asked to bring a non-perishable food item into their homeroom between now and Tuesday (Nov. 26).  The Homeroom that brings in the most food will win a pizza party on the day before Christmas break.  All donations will be distributed by the St. Vincent DePaul food bank.  There is a strong need for condiments such as ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.

--We are working on Addition and Subtraction Facts in Math.  Please practice basic facts with your child at home to increase their fluency with math facts.  Printable flash cards are available here:

--Wishing you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Thank you for all you do for your children!

Johnny Appleseed Week

On Johnny Appleseed's birthday, Miss Ash read the book pictured above to the students.  Then we did a descriptive writing project about an apple.  We webbed how the apple looked, smelled, tasted, felt, and sounded when we bit into it.  Then did a cloze activity filling in the blanks with words from our web.  After that, we tried two more kinds of apples and created a tally chart of our favorites.  Granny Smith apples won with 15 votes!   We also made a bar graph.

On Friday, we made Crockpot Applesauce.  During homeroom, the children watched as the apples were peeled, cut and added to the crockpot. Then we added sugar, cinnamon, and a bit of water to the pot.  We stirred the ingredients, then the apples simmered on medium for 4 hours.

Before we tasted our treat, the students and I did a shared writing of how to make applesauce.  We wrote then illustrated our sentences.  The students really enjoyed the applesauce as you can see...

Thanks for stopping by!

Changes...

After two years as a middle school teacher, I am returning to my first love...first grade.  Today I went to visit my new classroom, at my new school.  I'm excited about teaching first graders again and can't wait to get started!  Above is what you see when you walk in the door.   I love all the storage under the windows.  I'm planning on hiding the stuff with fabric...polka dots, I think!

I love, love, love the whole wall of bulletin board space.  I need to decide what will be hanging there.

This is to the left of the door.  Student lockers, more storage and a bathroom!  Love that!

This is another side view.  It's quite a large room, corner spot with a view of the green fields and forest behind the school.  I can't wait to liven up the color scheme!

This is to the right of the door, with the lovely Laurie (who gave up time today to give me the grand tour...love her!)

This is a tighter view of the first area.

Look for updates as the room comes together!
