Vale Wood Farms

On Thursday, May 7th we visited Vale Wood Farms.   The children learned about each step in the milk story, "From Moo to You." They rotated through stations to learn what a cow eats, how she makes milk, and how that milk is turned into the dairy products found in your refrigerator.  We even
had an ice cream treat at the end of our tour.  Here are some photos from our trip:

Learning in Room 23

Math

Last week, we completed our Geometry Unit in Math.  As a final activity we read the book, The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns and then created a shape man or woman, and wrote why we would want to be that shape.  The children were very creative with their ideas.

Writing

As part of our St. Patrick's Day activities, Lucky the Leprechaun visited our classroom and brought us magic powder that made Leprechaun pudding when milk was added and we shook it up while singing a special chant.  We read the story The Luckiest Leprechaun by Justine Korman and then wrote about when we feel lucky.  Above is our display and below are two examples of their work.

Reading

In Reading, my leveled group just completed the Reading Roots program.  They will now begin Reading Wings, the program for grades 2-5. The last book we in SFA Roots was Paul Bunyan's Pancakes To celebrate, students wrote a tall tale about a larger than life pet they would have similar to Paul Bunyan's pet, Blue Babe.   As part of the celebration, I made pancakes from scratch, and we had them as a mid-morning snack.  The children really enjoyed them!

Language Arts

In Language Arts, we are working on Research Writing.  This unit we are focusing on Earthworms.  On Friday, students observed a live earthworm and made Venn Diagrams comparing earthworms with people.  Their observations will be used as part of their research writing project.

March in Room 23

As part of our Geometry unit, students worked on composing and decomposing 2-D shapes, using different shapes in Math class.

The book we read as a springboard for our fantasy writing project.

In Language Arts, we were working on writing Fantasy fiction pieces.  We read the book, Square Cat
by Elizabeth Schoonmaker.  Then we brainstormed about two challenges we would have if we were square, and something good about being square.  We then used our brainstorming paper to compose our fantasy fiction pieces.  Above are our square people.

The author of Square Cat enjoyed our work with her book, that she sent us a copy of her new book Square Cat ABC.  We cant' wait to read it on Monday!  We are also now members of Eula's Fan Club!

On Monday, it was first grade's turn to take part in Mocha Monday.  The students were able to sip cups of Hot Chocolate during our afternoon break.  The smiles on their faces show how much they enjoyed their chocolaty treat!
