Congruent Shapes Activity

We started Unit 8 today in Everyday Math.  Our lesson was about Congruent and Non-Congruent Shapes.  Students used straws and twist ties to create Congruent shapes.  Hands-on activities are always fun, and at the same time challenge students to apply what they know about shapes in a new way.  You can see from the photos that they were very into creating their shapes.

Here's what's happening in Room 23......

In Science, we have been learning about Plants and Seeds.  We learned the life cycle of a plant, what a plant needs to grow, the parts of a plant and much more!  Next week, we will be doing a study on seeds.

We placed lima beans in baggies with a wet paper towel to see if they would sprout.  A few are sprouting as of today, which is day 6.  Students are recording the growth of their beans in writing and with pictures.

We also planted lima bean seeds in soil and will observe and record the results of that experiment.

In Math, we are finishing up our unit on Geometry.  The students worked with Geoboards and geobands today to create shapes.  Then each student made a triangle, a rectangle and a square on the board and wrote a description about the location of each shape using words, such as below, above, beside, next to, and in the corner.

More math pictures to come!

Unit 5: Geometry: Congruence, Constructions, and Parallel Lines Overview

This week we will begin working on Everyday Math Unit 5: Geometry: Congruence, Constructions, and Parallel Lines.  According to our recent scores on the Classroom Diagnostic Tool (CDT) our students struggle with basic geometry concepts.  Please encourage your child to complete homework assignments nightly to reinforce what is being taught at school, as well as encourage him/her to complete some of the suggested online activities below to increase his/her understanding.

The Parent Letter provides an excellent explanation of what our goals are for Unit 5, as well as provides an answer key for the Study Links.  Please use it to check your child's understanding of the assignments and concepts being taught. Also, Do Anytime Activities reinforce what is being taught in school.   Don't hesitate to contact me at ldryzal@gjsd.net with any concerns.
