Wings

Today my Reading Roots Readers earned their Wings.  We had a mini-ceremony in which each student was given a certificate and a pair of wings.  Then we had a Butterfly snack and drink to celebrate their success!   I'm so proud of them!  Several of my students have shown 6-8 stages of growth in 3 quarters.  Did I mention how proud I am of them?!

Reading Roots

In our Reading Roots class, students read a story called The Artists of Benin City.  In the story, artists at the Queen's Art School in Africa created a bronze metal hippo.  Our STAR story, Crafting Fun for a Rainy Day, provided directions for making clay animals.  For our Adventures in Writing lesson, students chose to write how to make a clay hippo.  After students wrote their directions, they were able to use them to create their own play-dough hippo.

The students worked hard on their projects!

Learning in Room 23

In Science, we learned about Extinct and Endangered Animals.  Students chose one of each kind of animal and wrote why they were extinct or endangered.

 A sample of student work.

In Reading, students wrote about what they like to do inside and outside on a winter day after reading
the story The Ice Storm.

Adventures in Writing

Students in Room 23 celebrated the 80th day of School with a visit from Zero the Hero! Students did a variety of base 10 activities, as well as crafted these snowmen using the number 80.

Students were "Blinging in the New Year" !  Each student wrote goals for the New Year....

What's happening in Room 23 ?

My Donors Choose Project was fully funded!  I was able to purchase the Epson Projector, pictured above, for use in our classroom.  We use it primarily for Reading Roots Interactive activities, but I have used it in our other subject areas, as well.

This is the projector in use during Reading Roots class.

In Reading Roots, we have been reading stories about China.  On our Adventures in Writing day, I made Hot Dog Stir Fry.  As we cooked the stir fry in the electric wok, the students wrote the steps to making stir fry.  It's quite easy to make and the students really enjoyed trying something new.

In Math, we are working on Fact Families.  The children really enjoyed using playing cards to create fact families during class on Friday.  You can find the printable here and use cards at home to practice with your child.  We used cards 2-9 to practice in class.

Thank you for stopping by!
