Miss Summerville's Visit

Miss Summerville just returned from her journey of student teaching in New Zealand and came back to us!  We didn't get to tell her good-bye in February due to the snow days, so we took this chance to give her a "proper" send off into the world of education.  Above, she is sharing a slide show of her time in New Zealand.

Opening her gift basket....

....filled with classroom supplies....

.....a personalized candy jar....

...the book I Knew You Could....

We wish Miss Summerville all the best!  Congratulations Miss Summerville on your graduation from

Study Nightly!

The Week in Review

This week we were learning about the three types of energy in Science.  They are Light, Heat and Sound Energy.  On Tuesday, we did the Hershey Kiss Heat Experiment, a freebie on TpT.  The children made a hypothesis about what would happen to the Hershey's Kiss in their open hand and what would happen to the candy in their closed hand.  After 5 minutes, we recorded our results.  You can see in the photo below that the chocolate kiss in the closed hand melted, which was a result of the heat the body produces.

In Math, we are finishing up our unit on Fractions.  This week we made Fractionpillars, which I still need to photograph, played Fraction Bingo, compared Fractions and did some work with Smarties and fractions.    The children seemed to really enjoy this activity.  Our Assessment will be on Monday.

In Language Arts, we finished our Easter Bunny vs. The Tooth Fairy:  Who Has the Tougher Job? Opinion writing assignment.  Next week, we will be do an Opinion piece based on the story The Easter Egg by Jan Brett.

We are also working in PATHS on making positive decisions and not letting our emotions cause us to act inappropriately.

Thank you for stopping by!

Push, Pull, Pizza and April Showers

In Science, we are learning about Force, specifically push and pull.  Yesterday, we discovered how we use push and pull with everyday objects.

In Math we made Fraction Pizzas.  This picture doesn't do the display justice!  The children did a really great job on this project.

The students shared their opinions about rainy days on umbrella shaped paper.  We made umbrellas and rain boots to display our writing.

Thank you for stopping by!

What's Happening in Room 23?

Our bean plants have finally begun to sprout!

 The children are so excited!

In Language Arts, we researched the life of George Washington Carver.  The students wrote about his life and accomplishments and made the portraits of the famous botanist.

In Math, we are learning about fractions.  This is the fraction sort the students completed in class.

In Science, we learned about matter and the three states of matter:  solids, liquids and gases.

This experiment showed the students how solids( baking soda) and liquids (white vinegar) can react and create a gas, blowing up the balloon.

This is Oobleck.  It is a suspension created by combining cornstarch and water.  It goes from a solid state to a liquid state and back again.

 Solid....

...then liquid.

It was a busy week of learning!

What's Happening in Room 23?

In Science this week, we took a closer look at seeds as part of our plant unit.  The students were given a variety of seeds which we described and compared.  I didn't get photos because I was caught up in what we were doing at the moment.  Their papers will be coming home on Monday.

Our final Research project is learning more about George Washington Carver.  He found 100s of uses for peanuts.   Above is our investigation paper.

In Math, we began our Fractions Unit.  In this picture, students are sorting a variety of cards with objects divided into 2 parts.  They had to determine if the object was equally or not equally divided.  We then labeled the objects as 1/2 if the parts were equal.

St. Patrick's Day

The students shared treats and encouragement with their reading teachers to spread some cheer!  Behind the tags are mini bags of Skittles candies.  The printable is available here.

We read The Luckiest Leprechaun by Justine Korman.  It's an engaging tale about friendship.

Then we wrote about when we feel lucky and created a Leprechaun, which we named with our own Irish name.  I am Mrs. O'Dryzal today!

This activity was in my file from when I taught first 3 years ago....you can get the patterns here.

Lucky Leprechaun left us a letter, along with some "Magic Powder."

We added milk to our "Magic Powder" and then....

While we sang the chant, the powder turned green!  After letting it set for 5 minutes....we had our own Leprechaun Snack!

Some of the children enjoying the Pistachio Pudding!
