Community Leaders Visit

 

 

Our City Manager, Mr. Carlos Gunby, and Assistant Manager, Mrs. Komar, came to West Side Elementary on Friday to visit the first graders as part of our Community Leaders, Rules and Laws unit in Social Studies.

 

 

Mrs. Komar shared information about the different departments in City Hall.

             Mr. Gunby shared the importance of our Police and Fire Departments and stressed that we are the ones who

can make a difference in our community.

 

We appreciate their time and sharing the important aspects of community government with us!

Our Frankenstein Math...isn't he the cutest?  We practiced using the "Frankenline" to count on and back, then created our own Frankensteins.

Producers and Consumers

Welcome!

Over the past week we've been studying  goods & services, and producers & consumers. To culminate our Community Jobs unit, the students participated in a snack mix assembly line.  

We discussed how a real assembly line is designed to work and how we were going to use the process to produce our own snack mix. Each student had a job either scooping items in the bag (Thank you parents for your donations!), labeling & closing the bags, or team supervisor.  We divided into two teams and tried to see who could produce ten bags first.

 

The children  had a great time and got a hands-on opportunity to experience being a producer and producing a good. They also got to be a consumer when they took the snack mix home to share with their families.  It was a really fun activity!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins

 

 

This week during our current integrated Science and ELA unit, we are learning about plants, and more specifically the pumpkin plant.  Above is a picture of the parts of the pumpkin plant that our students created.  We also made a model of the life cycle of a pumpkin plant, as well as a flip book showing what all plants need to grow!  During the remainder of our unit, we will be using the writing process to describe a pumpkin using adjectives.  Keep an eye out here for more photos to come!

Math Top It

 

One of the ways our first graders learn Number Sense is by playing a game called Top-It with a partner.  Each student flips over a card, says the number, then the student with the larger number keeps both cards.  They really enjoy seeing who "wins" each round.

Home Depot Visit

 

The Home Depot visited West Side on Thursday and did a building project with our class.

Vale Wood Farms

 

 

On Thursday, May 7th we visited Vale Wood Farms.   The children learned about each step in the milk story, "From Moo to You." They rotated through stations to learn what a cow eats, how she makes milk, and how that milk is turned into the dairy products found in your refrigerator.  We even

had an ice cream treat at the end of our tour.  Here are some photos from our trip:
