Transformations Foldable

This week we learned about Transformations.  As part of our introduction, the students made the foldable above to add to ther interactive notebook.
The foldable is courtesy of Kate at To The Square Inch.

I teach five sessions of Math 6 everyday.  To keep things orderly, each team was given a bag with the prepared cut-out shapes, brads and paper clips.    One student was the team leader and distributed the items to his/her teammates.  Once the students had the materials, we added them to the inside of the foldable, then identified each type of transformation.  In the days following, the students have referenced the foldable while working and reviewing.  The connections that they make to the foldable made it a very worthwhile activity.

Rock and Roll Vocabulary

Each reading cycle, the students are introduced to a set of 8 new vocabulary words.  On the 5th day of the cycle, they are tested on the vocabulary in a variety of ways, including fill-in-the-blank sentences and multiple choice.  In preparation, we've been playing Vocabulary Rock and Roll created by Mrs. Bainbridge and shared on Teacher's Notebook.  You can click on the picture above to make your own copy or click here.
Each team of four students is given a gameboard, a die, and a set of vocabulary cards.
A student chooses a card, then rolls the die and completes the related activity on the game board.

Since we began playing this game, vocabulary scores have improved for most of my students.

Bloom's Taxonomy Posters

At JMS, we are focusing on using higher level questioning and higher level thinking skills in our classrooms.  I am familiar with Bloom's Taxonomy and use it to script and plan my questioning.   My goal is for my students to use it to determine their level of thinking.   I saw a similar  set of posters on TPT, but thought I could make my own to coordinate with my polka dot decor.  The posters are in order from lower level to higher level thinking on the classroom wall.   I refer to them often during lessons to make the students aware of what level of thinking they are using, as well as encouraging them to go to the next level.
